Traditional database systems struggle greatly to handle the sheer size of data we are dealing with in the modern era, and how quickly and how often this data is generated. In addition to this, they also struggle with the variety of unstructured data, as the range of data bleeding out from communications and other forms of media is impossible for a relational database to categorise.
